Residencies March - April, 2024

"Instrumentos de Cocina" (Cooking Instruments) is a project by the sound artist ALV Adina developed from the collection of the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas in Madrid. The installation is based on a series of utilitarian kitchen utensils from a bygone era that are now exhibited frozen in time. ALV Adina explores the sound dimension of space by transforming these objects into sound. She digitally replicates their forms in MIDI data that specifically conveys musical notation, pitch and intensity for later playback. The project is made up of two parts: the sonic representation of the material in the digital world, translating the three-dimensional objects into flat, abstract figures and, secondly, their return to the physical plane as new interactive objects that give the space a new sonic dimension.

The installation is developed through sound experimentation in which ALV Adina digitally constructs on her DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) the shapes of the objects found in the room of the National Museum of Decorative Arts that recreates a 17th century kitchen. These shapes and patterns, distributed on the kitchen table, are activated by touch through their physical materialisation, generating the sound resulting from this pattern.

The aim of the residency was to design and produce the physical objects from their digital replicas through 3D printing with recycled PLA.

The project was presented at the Museo Nacional de Artes Decorativas from 28 May to 28 July, as part of the group exhibition 'Computed Matter', part of the programme of the Mayrit Biennial of Design and Architecture of Madrid.
